AFC Policy Summit: Keynote Speakers, Sen. Cory Booker

Educational choice is truly a bipartisan issue. Elected officials from both sides of the aisle come together at the Annual AFC National Policy Summit to share their experiences with school choice and why they are passionate about bringing educational options to every child.

One of the many politicians who have spoken at the Summit was Cory Booker. Then the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Booker addressed the urgency of the education crisis in our country and how the United States is rapidly falling behind other nations when it comes to education standards. The way to solve these problems is through educational choice.

AFC Policy Summit: Sheila's Success Story

The AFC National Policy Summit is an opportunity for the educational choice community to come together to celebrate the successes of school choice and its ability to change lives.

One of these successes was shared by Sheila Jackson whose daughter, Shawnee, was a recipient of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. Sheila knew that the public school Shawnee formerly attended was failing her. Shawnee struggled in math and was frustrated with school in general.

AFC Policy Summit: Sandeep’s Success Story

AFC Policy Summit: Sandeep’s Success Story

At the AFC National Policy Summit, the educational choice community gathers for the opportunity to discuss policy, but also offers an opportunity to hear from those who have directly benefited from choice programs.

Sandeep Thomas is one of those students who benefited from having the ability to choose the school that best suited his needs. Sandeep was an orphan in India suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder when he was adopted by a family here in the United States. He struggled with traditional public school, but his parents understood the importance of education and would stop at nothing to try to find a good fit for their son. Eventually, they found virtual learning and Sandeep succeeded in the program.

Correcting the record: President Obama, Bill O'Reilly, school choice and the facts

Correcting the record: President Obama, Bill O'Reilly, school choice and the facts

By Kevin P. Chavous

Earlier last week, Valerie Strauss, an education reporter for the Washington Post, used her blog to reinforce President Obama’s anti-parental choice position and take a whack at Bill O’Reilly.  But in the process, Strauss misinformed readers about the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP) and other studies of private school choice programs.

Strauss writes that the President was correct when he told O’Reilly, “As a general proposition, vouchers [have] not significantly improved the performance of kids that are in these poorest communities…”

Strauss supports the President’s argument, citing U.S. Government Accountability Office report which raised “financial systems, controls, policies, and procedures” questions about the D.C. Children’s Trust Fund which administers the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, but this study did not measure student performance, graduation rates or proficiency.

AFC Policy Summit: Panels

The AFC Policy Summit is a great forum to discuss all aspects of educational choice. The conference has different panels and discussions dedicated to a number of topics including implementation of educational choice, why programs are so important to student and families along with how to overcome challenges to choice policy.

A panel from the 2013 Summit examined how the manner in which students are selected for public schools, mainly based on their ZIP code, places children at a disadvantage. Choice offers a chance for every child to have access to a quality education, no matter where they live.
